Military Challenge Coins: A Brief Overview

A challenge coin is a tiny or petite coin or medallion that was frequently used in the Army, that bears an organization's  emblem and is in ownership by the group's members. As it was known they are submitted or handed over to indicate membership when challenged and to improve morale. To add on this, they are collected by service members. The challenge coins are usually presented by unit commanders that are recognized for their extraordinary achievement by any member of the group. When paying a visit to an organization or institution, they are used for exchange for recognition.

 

How the air force coins came to originate from many different stories that give the details of their existence. In the past, the coins were awarded to soldiers as a form of recognition of what they had achieved. For others the coins were known as "portrait medals, " and they were used to indicate the happening of special events that include royalty, nobility or the prominent persons.

The challenge coins are not as expensive when it comes to designing and producing them. The two processes of manufacturing the coins are: zinc-alloy castings or die struck bronze. The zinc alloy castings do give the advantage of it being made at a low cost. While a die struck bronze or brass coin is more expensive, but the result will show a far superior product.
